A new era of transparency

Details

In an industry often characterized by time pressure and creative challenges, transparency and employee wellbeing are key. How can we ensure that all employees work in a safe and supportive environment?

It is essential that production companies develop mechanisms to receive regular feedback on working conditions and respond quickly to issues. This is where the "Call It!" app, which was launched in the UK in 2021, comes in. It makes it possible to anonymously evaluate everyday working life and thus draw attention to concerns about health, safety and the working environment at an early stage.

bildundtonfabrik (btf) in Germany is committed to making this transparency the standard and supports the app developers. The aim is to promote a culture in which regular reflection on working conditions is a matter of course.

Sarah van Holt (btf GmbH) and Kate Wilson (Callit! App) talk about the challenges and opportunities of their collaboration.

Human-machine symbiosis - How AI is changing film production

Details

Hannes Jakobsen and his digital studio DRIVE beta are exploring the boundaries of the fusion between humans and machines. What potential does this offer? What happens when AI is seen not just as an assistant, but as a partner?

Based on three extraordinary projects, he provides insights into the integration of artificial intelligence in the production of new film projects: Documentary: "Better Than Human? - Life with AI" How is artificial intelligence changing our lives? Can it replace emotional caregivers? This documentary sheds light on the ethical, social and emotional challenges associated with the integration of AI into our everyday lives. Experience the controversial question: Are machines better than humans? Film: "BOOM - One band, 1000 problems" An AI chatbot is part of the ensemble cast of this feature film, which tells the story of a successful girl band. Dynamic and spontaneous interactions made possible by the chatbot's continuous behind-the-scenes prompting take the story to a whole new level. Documentary: "The AI Manifesto" Four filmmakers come together to write a manifesto for the future of film in the age of AI. This film shows what new paths open up for the film industry when creativity and technology complement each other.

Let us inspire you and discuss the future of artificial intelligence in the creative industry with us.

AI-powered tools are taking story and project development by storm, promising to boost creativity, efficiency, and speed. They assist, next to plenty of other applications, in creating visuals to illustrate ideas, written material, styles, and visions. But (how) does AI-assisted pre-visualization really work, beyond the hype? In a live experiment and working with the results achieved in the previous Explorer Impuls, graphic designer and visual artist Julie Wieland will go from idea to draft to concept in 30 min and explore how AI PRE-VIZ PROMPTING can be used in story and project development. This session is a follow-up to Explorer Impuls #9 on Sept 5 on AI STORY PROMPTING.

A Virtual Production case study about the upcoming Sci-Fi Thriller "The Occupant"

Raymond van der Kaaij (producer)
Hugo Keijzer (director)

moderator
Erwin M. Schmidt (Produzentenverband)

Details

Virtual Production enables filmmaker to tell stories in unprecedented ways. It combines live action and computer graphics in real time and dissolves the traditional workflow of pre-production, production and post-production. Actors can now perform in front of large LED screens, virtual and real elements merge in real time, virtual locations and VFX are pre-produced for the shooting ... This radically different production philosophy is a real game changer, not just for high budget productions.

Producer Raymond van der Kaaij (Executive Producer and Managing Partner of Revolver Amsterdam) and director Hugo Keijzer will give an exclusive insight into the production story of their upcoming Sci-Fi feature film THE OCCUPANT.

On a desperate quest for her dying sister’s survival, Abby finds herself stranded and alone in the icy Russian wilderness, where a mysterious helper offers her the choice between accepting the inevitable or abandoning reality.

Watch the teaser here: https://revolver.nl/film-tv/2225/the-occupant

Proof of concept selected for Frontieres Platform Cannes 2020, Sitges Filmfestival, 23rd Bucheon International Fantastic Filmfestival.

The project has received an Epic MegaGrant from Epic Games. The MegaGrant will be used to accelerate the developmental use of groundbreaking filmmaking technologies with Unreal Engine in the real-time graphics and virtual production space for the film. The effective use of revolutionary gaming technology coupled with years of experience telling impactful stories will take the vision of this film to new heights.

Revolver is an Amsterdam based production house with a global reach. The company creates content operating at the intersection of entertainment, advertising & digital.

Details

Green production and the financial reality of independent producers

Details

2020 will be the year when the film industry is going green. Producing sustainably is high up on the agenda of studios, broadcasters, films funds, producers, markets and festivals. While green production will soon be an industry norm, producing sustainably comes with higher cost and often a lack of sustainable resources, means of transportation, materials for set construction etc. How does this trend impact the work of independent producers, who already struggle with a dire financial situation and tight budgets? How can independent producers be incentivized to produce sustainably, in a situation where for many reasons it becomes harder and harder to finance films? We want to take a closer look at this complex issue, hear your thoughts and get your input.

Film Markets in the age of digital market places and the platform business model

René Schäfer
digital transformation expert
at hy - the Axel Springer ecosystem firm
(Berlin)

Details

Digital market places and the platform business model are ubiquitous today. From the most valuable start-ups that are disrupting traditional markets, to established companies that have shifted their business model from a traditional linear to a platform based approach. But what exactly is a digital market place, how does the platform business model work? The platform business model does not own the means of production, but rather creates and facilitates the means of connection. René will highlight how platforms fundamentally change the interaction between buyers and sellers and how they impact the balance between demand and offer. He will also explore how a traditional film market could look like if successfully transformed into a platform and what this would mean for the work of producers.

Working with streaming services: Terms of trade, best practice charter OR MORE REGULATION?

Alexandra Lebret
managing director of the European Producers Club
(Paris)

Philipp Kreuzer
producer at Maze Pictures
member of the board of the German Producers Association
Berlin / Munich

Details

The British Codes of Practice from 2002 have fundamentally impacted the market dynamics and changed the relationship between broadcasters and producer in the UK and have inspired similar agreements in many countries. The basic assumption of this mother of all Terms of Trade is that content diversity and innovation from an audience perspective will only happen if content producers get a significant financial reward and receive a pioneer profit for their efforts and innovations. Streaming platforms have until now not entered into collective agreements with producers and their associations, standard Terms of Trade have not yet been agreed on. Alexandra and Philipp will discuss with the audience whether independent producers need more protection when working with streamers, the potential design of Terms of Trade, and explore if a best practice charter is necessary. They will also share the outcome of the 1st European Film Politics Seminar (organized by the European Film Market on Jan 20) which has focused on the very same questions.
